Google’s new mobile-friendly ranking algorithm (A.K.A: “Mobilegeddon”) starts rolling out today!
Starting April 21, Google will be expanding their use of mobile-friendliness as a search ranking signal. The company says the change will have a “significant impact” on all mobile searches. As a result, Google says users will find it easier to get relevant, high-quality search results that are optimized for their devices.
Google answered a series of questions in a Google+ hangout on the topic of this new mobile-friendly ranking algorithm. A few things we learned were:
- The algorithm will start rolling out on April 21st and will take a few days to a week to completely take effect around the world.
- You are either mobile-friendly or not; there are no degrees of mobile-friendliness in this algorithm.
- The fastest way to see if your web pages are mobile-friendly is to see if you already have the mobile-friendly label in mobile search results. Or you can check the mobile-friendly testing tool, which should match the live Google search results.
Google started highlighting mobile-friendly sites in results last year, and these upcoming changes are great news for mobile users! It should motivate those businesses that still don’t have a mobile site to finally build one.
